Our most recent club began with a student's vision to have a voice in politics after learning of the horrific events in Parkland, FL. With activism being the driving force, a growing group of students are taking matters into their own hands, and being the change they wish to see in the world. More will be available soon on their journey so far!
In 2015-16, my students assessed a variety of primary and secondary sources when learning about Christopher Columbus, including some of Columbus' own journal. By the time we reached the scheduled class debate on whether we should celebrate Columbus Day, we found that the overwhelming majority already wished to see the abolishing of celebrating Columbus. The students had learned of the explorer's destruction would eventually wipe out 90% of the native population of Hispaniola, and were determined to spread this information to our community with the hopes of changing the celebration of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day.
